At 6:01pm on Thursday, September 22, 1983 I breathed my first breath on this planet.
I don't really remember it, but a few people I love do.
It feels really insane now to watch my good friends have babies and breathe their first breaths knowing that I did that once, and now several years later, I'm living life as an adult in this culture and family that helped shape me. What an incredible journey.
I find myself at kids' birthday parties more and more often lately, so it feels natural on this day to reflect on some of my celebrations between that first breath and today, so here's to several of those memories:
09.22.87 - I remember blowing out my birthday candles in tears because attempt one to extinguish those four little flames had left my upper lip on fire.
09.22.93 - My 4th grade birthday party opening gifts in the basement of our home in Garden City, KS, sweet Honey Hooper gave me a beautiful bowl of potpourri. My response, "Oh!... My mom will love this." A scolding from a very embarrassed mother for being ungrateful quickly ensued. (Honey, if you're reading this (fat chance), I'm so sorry. Feel free to leave your negative thoughts about that twerp-y fourth grader in the comments. I deserve it!)
09.22.96 - This co-ed party included an incredible door-to-door scavenger hunt* that I'd be terrified to send kids on now, and watching what would become one of my very favorite movies for the first time with some of my closest friends.
09.22.99 - Oh I love this one! On my 16th birthday, one of my dearest friends, Valerie, surprised me and arranged for a limo to take us and 10 of my closest friends to The Woodlands for a Goo Goo Dolls concert...AMAZING! This is still one of my very favorite songs.
09.22.03 -Sophomore year at A&M. I was turning 20 and going to a chapel service on campus with some friends...until I was SHOCKED to be detoured to Mason's house to be celebrated with my favorite Claire (our birthdays are only a day apart, so we celebrated together often) and our closest friends. I loved that night! Was that the start of TuesdayNightBreakfastKlub?
09.22.09 - Amidst the craziness of sister's wedding plans, I was BLOWN AWAY when she and Nikki totally surprised me with a fun Austin birthday party at the Welch's new house that included so many of the people I love.
Celebrating is the best. What an exciting adventure my life has been!
Well, I promised myself I wouldn't write another birthday post about time flying and feeling like I was still 14, so this is me keeping my promise. However, I will say that these adult birthdays happen so close to one another and I'm beginning to struggle to separate the years in my head so I will include in this post a list of several things that this 27th year offered for my personal records.
celebrated new brother-in-law | we moved houses | Hay & Nikki move to ATX | muddy ACL | Rubey turns 30 and we party | Sarah's engaged and MARRIED this year | DELTAS and so many other college faves | launch Everest Road | traveled a lot and loved it - Louisville for Stella Jane, Tennessee, Cali to see the Walkers, Salida! to ski, Dallas, Tyler, Galvy, LA with the Rubeys, Junction, DC for dad's bday and Breck | and so much more...
I'm so very blessed and thankful for the life I've been given...but even more thankful for the people in it.
Fired up for year 28!!
So you have a mental picture of this 27 year old 19 years ago,
I'll leave you with this old photo of me and the sibs at Halloween 1991 just one month after my 8th birthday!
